Connect 2017: Get Equipped
This set of 4 independent evening courses is primarily aimed to serve Christians with work experience who want to deepen their ability to understand, teach and live out the message of the Bible. Please note that these courses are not as extensive as our Auckland Park or Soweto classes.
Each evening session has 2 parts:
Part 1 - Understanding the Bible: How the Bible fits together and tells God's one great salvation plan of God in Christ. There is also skills training on how to understand any specific text, as well as a whole book.
Part 2 - Applying the Bible: How the Bible speaks into our world and how it applies to all of life. We explore how God's Word is relevant to everything in our world, and how we can be better equipped to connect God's Word to the world in which we live.
Course 1: God's Story, Our Story
What is the essence of my faith and how do I connect it with my world?
This course looks at how the whole Bible proclaims one large story. We also explore what this story means for how we navigate and act in our world. This will include a Bible overview, a Biblical worldview foundation, a look at various Christian approaches to the Bible and to the world, and a comprehensive understanding of what it means to be spiritual.
Course 2: God's Big Idea of Relationships
How can I be more thoughtful and intentional about all my relationships?
This course unpacks in more detail what "love God and love neighbour" can practically look like at home, in church, at the workplace and in wider society. We trace how this deeply relational theme runs through the whole Bible and God's entire kingdom, and we explore and apply a particular model designed to help us understand and improve relationships.
Course 3: Tools to Understand and Apply the Bible
How can I better understand the Bible and how it applies to our world?
This course offers a toolset for understanding and applying the Bible. We examine various exegetical and hermeneutical skills, e.g. framework and text; literary genre; historical and cultural context; the line of truth. On the application side, tools for engagement include good questions, "what/why/how", "root&fruit", "function/danger/opportunity" and the like.
Course 4: A Book of the Bible brought to Life
How do I teach an entire book of the Bible - faithful to the text, and relevant to life?
This course looks at how we come to understand and apply a selected book of the Bible in its entirety. With ample opportunity to practice, the course offers a methodology for the preparation of a sermon or Bible Study on a given passage of scripture, with a particular emphasis on making the message "real" and practical in today's context.
